Top Tip
Now you know how to make a bowl from clay, you could try your hand at hanging decorations using cookie cutters.
How to Make
- To start, ask an adult to help you protect against clay falling onto any soft furnishings by sitting at a table that is meant for messy activities, on a messy mat or doing the craft outside.
- This is a fun but also very messy craft, so it is advisable you wear an apron.
- Next, find a small bowl or plastic pot and put a sheet of plastic wrap or a piece of bin liner over the bowl.
- Pull off a section of clay and begin to roll it into a ball.
- If the clay is too cold, just keep rolling it in your hands until it warms up and becomes easier to work with.
- Put the ball of clay into the bowl on top of the plastic and begin to mould it to the shape of the bowl using your fingers, keeping it at least 1cm thick all over. Add more clay if needed.
- Dip your fingers into some water and smooth out any bumps and cracks.
- Lift the clay you have just formed out of the mould using the plastic to help you lift it, then remove the plastic and leave to dry.
- Be careful not to damage the shape of the clay as you peel the plastic off.
- Leave the dish to dry overnight. It can take up to 2 days to dry depending on the atmosphere and thickness.
- Once fully dry, paint the trinket dish in a base coat of white paint before mixing blue and white to make a sky-blue colour.
- Dry dip your finger into yellow paint and add lots of little fingerprint bees around and inside your dish.
- Allow all the paint to dry before drawing stripes and wings on your bees with deco pens.
- Varnish the entire trinket dish.
- To finish, stick on the wings using a glue stick.
