Pumpkin String Art

Top Tip

Try not to pull the string too tight, as you might pull the pins out of the backing.

  1. Print out the pumpkin template onto a sheet of white paper.
  2. Take a sheet of polystyrene and put a strip of double sided tape onto each edge. Peel off the backing and place another sheet of polystyrene on top.
  3. Repeat step two so that you now have three polystyrene sheets stuck together. Then use the same technique to stick a sheet of black paper on top.
  4. Lay the pumpkin template over the top of the black paper and press a sequin pin around the template to make holes in the black paper.
  5. Remove the template and then place a sequin pin in each of the holes that you created in step four. They should be about two thirds of the way in, so there is still room to tie your string.
  6. Take some orange wool and tie a knot around one of the pins at the bottom of the pumpkin. Make sure you leave about 2-3 inches of thread at the end, as you will need this later.
  7. Wrap the wool around each pin within the pumpkin section of the design, making sure it crosses over the template in different directions. Try to make sure each pin has been used at least once and all of the thread is within the pumpkin outline.
  8. Wrap the wool around the outside of the pumpkin all the way around, then take it back to the pin you started with and tie a knot with the end of the wool that you left.
  9. Then take some green embroidery wool and tie it around one of the pins at the top of the design. Repeat the same technique, but this time make sure you stay within the stalk and leaf section of the design. Then wrap it around the edges of those sections and tie in place.
  10. Trim the ends of the thread to finish your design.
